Fantastic films

by Anood Al-Samerai on 19 September, 2014

As well as council meetings and committees, local councillors have the great privilege of being invited to all sorts of community events. There is so much going on in Southwark and I feel incredibly lucky to see so much of it.

One thing that struck me recently was how many good community films are made. From Southwark TV’s amazing work with places like Bede House Youth Club to Hollerbox and their recent community workshops to Downside Fisher’s We are all One. I’ve been to lots of screenings in the Bussey Building and Shortwave cinema and last night I was in the Trispace Gallery in the Old Biscuit Factory. They were showing ‘It’s Our Park’ as part of the Friends of Southwark Park AGM and it was truly magical. Every councillor in the borough should see it.

It made me really think what a wealth of creativity, history and passion is stored in all the films that must have been made about different parts and themes in the borough over the years. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to bring them all together in some way?

Some months ago, I asked the Leader and Chief Exec of the council about showing a community film at council meetings. After last night, I’ve contacted the Head of Communications as the council should bring together and celebrate all that has been recorded by our most amazing and dedicated community groups. I will pursue this further but in the meantime please let me know if you know of any great local community films.
